Shawn M. LaTourette is an associate at Lieberman & Blecher who represents clients in various environmental and land use matters, with a focus on complex litigation, including toxic and hazardous exposure claims and class actions. Mr. LaTourette has litigated environmental cost recovery claims, natural resource damage actions, toxic torts, and land use disputes, among other matters. His litigation practice includes representation of both plaintiffs and defendants before state and federal courts in matters that are often at the cutting edge of our practice areas. For example, Mr. LaTourette was a member of a trial team that successfully defended the first natural resource damage claims to reach trial in New Jersey and perhaps the nation. His clients have included large multinational corporations (such as The Dow Chemical Company and General Electric), as well as individuals, small and mid-sized companies and non-profit organizations.
Complementing his litigation practice, Mr. LaTourette also represents clients in environmental cleanup, regulatory and compliance matters. Mr. LaTourette assists clients in navigating the hazardous site remediation process, pursuing insurance coverage, and complying with environmental and land use related regulations. He has counseled clients on issues arising under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (“CERCLA” or “Superfund”), the Spill Compensation and Control Act, the Industrial Site Recovery Act (“ISRA”), the Resource Conservation and Control Act (“RCRA”), the Clean Water Act and National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (“NPDES”), and many other environmental and land use related laws on the federal, state and local levels.
Before joining Lieberman & Blecher as an associate, Mr. LaTourette was an environmental and class action litigator with Latham & Watkins LLP, one of the largest international law firms. Before beginning legal practice, Mr. LaTourette served as a judicial intern to the Honorable Dolores K. Sloviter, former Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and Associate Justice Barry T. Albin of the New Jersey Supreme Court. He also served as a law clerk in the Environmental Practice Group at the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office. During law school, Mr. LaTourette was a Dean's Scholar who served on the Editorial Board of the Rutgers Law Journal, as Vice-President of the Environmental Law Society and as a Legal Analysis, Research and Writing Teaching Assistant. He was also the recipient of several legal writing awards, with his work being recognized by the Environmental Law Institute.
Prior to attending law school at Rutgers-Camden, Mr. LaTourette enjoyed a ten year career as a litigation paralegal assigned to environmental, mass tort and land use cases. Six of those years were spent with Lieberman & Blecher.
